Program description

From the height of a street curb to the plastic lid on your coffee cup, design is all around us and influences your daily life. If you had the ability to create the world around you, what decisions would you make? A humanities perspective on the future of the built environment is brought about by the unique method to understanding and influencing the physical world offered by the Bachelor of Arts in Applied Humanities with a focus on Spatial Organization & Design Thinking. The curriculum prepares you for careers that speak about and affect change in buildings, communities, and landscapes by offering courses in sustainability, digital media, fabrication technology, and other topics. Additionally, this degree can serve as a springboard for graduate work in landscape architecture, architecture, urban planning, and design.

Program structure

Core Courses

  • Introduction to Applied Humanities (3 units)
  • Applied Humanities Practice: Techniques and Technologies for Public Enrichment (3 units)
  • Intercultural Competence: Culture, Identity, Adaptation, and Intercultural Relations (3 units)
  • Pre-Internship: Building Career Readiness (3 units)
  • Innovation and the Human Condition: Learning How to Improve Life in the Community and Beyond (3 units)
  • Internship (3 units)
  • Senior Capstone (3 units)
  • One elective (3 units) from the approved list.

 

 

Emphasis Courses

  • Introduction to Design Thinking (4 units)
  • Introduction to Digital Media (2 units)

— and select 2 of the following areas and take 2 courses from each area (1 of which must be an upper division course)

  • Sustainability
  • History and Theory of Architecture
  • History and Theory of Landscape Architecture, Planning, an the Build Enviroment
  • Design Representation and Fabrication

Emphasis courses cannot also count toward a minor in the College of Architecture, Planning Landscape Architecture.
