Program description
To prepare them for work with domestic or international NGOs, think tanks, corporations, and government agencies, graduate students in this program learn to critically assess the relationships between the media, the public, and policymakers amid quickly changing events or crises. The Master of Arts in Studies of Global Media (GLO) program prepares graduates to conduct effective, moral, and culturally sensitive research, analysis, verification, and communication of knowledge on complex and important global topics.
Program structure
The flexible curriculum allows students to enter the program in the fall, summer, or spring semester, during the first or second sessions. The courses complement one another yet require no prerequisites. The M.A. could be earned in one year yet students generally take 18 months to two years to complete the work. Part-time students are welcome.
Course Requirements
To earn a master’s degree in Studies of Global Media (GLO), students complete the 31-credit program.
- 6 units are required courses:
- Freedom of Expression and the Right to Information OR GLO 580: Digital Media Law in a Global Context
- Disinformation and Information Security in a Global Media Context
- 1 unit Master’s Capstone (GLO 698) – Your choice of projects
- 24 units (minimum) may be chosen from electives (with five courses, or 15 credits, minimum, in Studies of Global Media unless the program has received approval for alternatives).

Requirements for applicants
The GLO Executive Committee makes recommendations to the Graduate College regarding admissions. The Graduate College reviews all recommended applicants to confirm they meet graduate admissions criteria before sending admits the certificate of admission. For GLO, the primary question in assessing applicants for admission is whether or not the committee believes the applicant can successfully complete graduate-level work. The committee will recommend any candidate it views as qualified within the maximum number of students approved to be admitted each year by the Executive Committee.
Criteria for Admission: Academic Excellence As evidenced in:
- Statement of Purpose
- Letters of recommendation – one is required
- Transcripts
- GPA. To be competitive for admissions, applicants must achieve a GPA of at least 3.0 for the M.A.
English Language Requirements

- IELTS composite score of 7.0
