Program description
This master's program has a balanced emphasis on theory, research, and practice, making it ideal for professionals working in applied linguistics as well as those teaching English as a second language. This implies that you acquire advanced knowledge in the contexts of teaching and learning, professional and practical experience, and the theory and practices of teaching, learning, and language. You will benefit from one-on-one instruction from professors who are leading authorities in areas like classroom discourse analysis, second language writing, socio-cognitive approaches to second language acquisition, and technology-enhanced language teaching because of the program's small size—annual cohorts never surpass 12 students.
Program structure
The degree requires 33 credit hours of coursework, traditionally completed in 4 semesters.
In your final semester, you'll complete the Applied ESL seminar, which includes completion of a teaching portfolio and an action research project, presentation of the project, and professional development and job preparation activities.
