Program description
The BA Fashion Communication programme at Central Saint Martins is globally renowned for innovation and comprises three pathways: Image and Promotion, Histories and Theories, and Journalism. The Journalism pathway is multi-platform, focusing on investigation and communication through writing, podcasts, documentary film, and digital media.
Students are taught by practicing journalists and engage in live projects with fashion brands, gaining invaluable experience through internships and freelance opportunities. The course encourages adaptability and critical thinking, challenging existing modes of representation within the fashion industry. A core commitment is to reflect and influence the sustainable transformation of fashion, with social, racial, and climate justice as fundamental values.
Graduates work at the forefront of the field as freelance journalists, editors, content creators, and producers, equipped with both editorial skills and a strong ethical framework. The programme fosters an international, collaborative environment dedicated to shaping a more just and equitable fashion industry.

Stage 1

Stage 1 builds foundational research, writing, and presentation skills essential for fashion journalism, while fostering a collaborative environment from students' diverse backgrounds. The year includes the Creative Unions unit, where interdisciplinary teams address real-world social and environmental issues to create positive change.

- Unit 8: Fashion Critical Studies
Stage 2 focuses on consolidating your personal journalistic practice and enhancing industry knowledge through live projects and guest feedback. You will explore the breadth of fashion communication to develop confidence and your individual critical voice, while understanding your role within the wider industry network. The stage also introduces diverse research methods from visual culture to social theory to prepare for self-directed study.

Stage 3 is defined by self-directed learning, where you define your identity as a journalist and decide on your media, approach, and specialist interests. You will complete a degree project proposal and produce a final portfolio that showcases your skills and career intentions for contemporary fashion journalism. Alongside this, you will complete a dissertation on a chosen cultural topic, extending your research and analytical abilities to support and deepen your studio practice.

Requirements for applicants
The standard entry requirements for this course are as follows:
One or a combination of the following accepted full Level 3 qualifications:
- 2 A Levels at grade B or above (one of which should be in a humanities subject, requiring essay based answers e.g. History, History of Art, English Literature, Philosophy)
- Pass at Foundation Diploma in Art & Design (Level 3 or 4) and 1 A Level at Grade C or above
- Merit, Pass, Pass (MPP) at BTEC Extended Diploma (preferred subjects include Arts or Humanities e.g. Art, Art and Design, History, History of Art, English Literature, Philosophy)
- Pass at UAL Extended Diploma
- Access to Higher Education Diploma (preferred subjects include Arts or Humanities e.g. Art, Art and Design, History, History of Art, English Literature, Philosophy)
- Equivalent EU/International qualifications, such as International Baccalaureate Diploma (24 points)
- And three GCSE passes at grade 4 or above (grade A–C), including one modern European language.
Entry to this degree course is highly competitive. Selection is determined by the quality of your application, indicated primarily in your writing and statement.
Exceptionally applicants who do not meet these course entry requirements may still be considered.
The course team will consider each application that demonstrates additional strengths and alternative evidence. This might, for example, be demonstrated by:
- Related academic or work experience
- The quality of the personal statement
- A strong academic or other professional reference
- Or a combination of these factors.

- IELTS score of 6.5 or above, with at least 5.5 in reading, writing, listening and speaking
