Program description

The BA Fashion Design programme at Central Saint Martins is a world-leading course known for cultivating innovators and critical thinkers within a dynamic art school environment. It is structured into five distinct pathways: Womenswear, Menswear, Knit, Print, and Communication, with a strong emphasis on collaboration and a non-gendered approach to design that breaks down societal barriers.

Each pathway, such as Knit, combines deep technical mastery with creative exploration, encouraging students to experiment with sustainable materials and new technologies to develop their unique voice. The course is taught by a diverse team of internationally connected practitioners, ensuring education is at the forefront of the industry.

Central to the programme's ethos is a commitment to shaping the future of fashion, with core values of social, racial, and climate justice driving a focus on sustainable transformation. The curriculum actively engages with decolonising agendas, promoting inclusive and diverse practices that reflect the global community and aim to create a fairer world through ethical creative practice.

Program structure

  • Unit 1: Introduction to the Fashion Programme and to Studying at CSM
  • Unit 2: Skills, Research and Creative Development. Part 1
  • Unit 3: Skills, Research and Creative Development. Part 2
  • Unit 4: Creative Unions

Stage 1 (the first year) establishes a foundational skill set and introduces effective communication methods, while building a collaborative community from students' diverse backgrounds. Through practical workshops in Units 2 and 3, students develop core design ideas and explore the specifics of their chosen pathway. The year culminates in the cross-disciplinary Creative Unions unit, where small teams collaborate to address real-world social and environmental issues through positive, ethical interventions.

Stage 2

  • Unit 5: Positioning and Professional Preparation
  • Unit 6: Developing Creative Perspectives
  • Unit 7: Voice and Vision
  • Unit 8: Fashion Critical Studies

Stage 2 focuses on consolidating your personal practice and professional future. You will enhance industry knowledge through live projects and guest feedback, while developing your individual voice and critical opinions. The year also introduces key research methods and critical theories to support more self-directed and conceptually grounded work.

Stage 3

  • Unit 9: Final Collection: Research, Design and Development
  • Unit 9a: Final Collection: Research, Design and Development (Option 2)
  • Unit 10: Dissertation
  • Unit 10a: Dissertation: Extended (Option 2)
  • Unit 11: Final Collection: Resolution and Global Sharing

Stage 3 is the culmination of the degree, marked by increased autonomy and the definition of a personal creative identity. Students complete the research and design phase for their final collection, presenting a professional-standard proposal. The year also involves completing a dissertation on a chosen cultural topic, which aligns with and enriches their studio practice, before finishing and presenting their final degree collection and portfolio.
