Program description
The BA Fine Art at Central Saint Martins is a programme dedicated to critically questioning artistic and societal norms.
It focuses on two core questions: the site where art is produced and the site where it is encountered by an audience.
The course encourages students to be imaginative and resourceful practitioners, working across diverse media within interdisciplinary studios. It actively engages with urgent contemporary issues, including climate, social and racial justice. Through experimental exhibition-making in both traditional and unconventional spaces, students learn to challenge and reshape the cultural landscape, preparing to define the future of art practice.
Program structure
Stage 1
- Unit 1: Studio
- Unit 2: Making
- Unit 3: Describing
- Unit 4: Creative Unions
Stage 1 asks: Where do we work and what is practice?
Start with an introduction to Art School, which covers the course's instructional techniques and events. Learning will occur through staff practice, networks, tutorials, lectures, critical discussion, seminars, and self-directed study. Studio and Critical Studies experts will help you identify artistic interests and issues. Stage 1 will culminate with you creating studio methods that suit your interests and writing your first essay. Tutors will help you confidently self-direct your work.
Stage 2
- Unit 5: Placing
- Unit 6: Reading
- Unit 7: Writing
- Unit 8: Encountering
Stage 2 addresses publicizing work.
How and where to exhibit your work will be emphasized as you build your profession. The year-group can exhibit their work in cross-program selected exhibitions and open studios where the art program welcomes the public. Choose from a variety of external projects to explore the different ways you might make your practice public. Through Critical Studies lectures, conversations, and gallery visits, you'll explore contemporary art's concepts, practices, and disputes.
By the end of Stage 2, you will have discovered several ways to make your work public and began to contextualize your practice.
Stage 3
- Unit 9: Positioning
- Unit 10: Practice
Stage 3 equips you to contextualize your work intellectually, culturally, politically, and socially. You will be encouraged to plan your cultural industry career and identify strategies for sustainable practice after the course.
The working week
The majority of your time (40 hours) will be devoted to learning activities like workshops, debates, and individual and collaborative practice.
