Program description
The BA Jewellery Design programme at Central Saint Martins fosters innovation by encouraging students to question the very role, position, and materiality of jewellery in a contemporary context. The course provides a comprehensive education, blending traditional hand-making skills with digital techniques, material exploration, and critical thinking, all supported by drawing and model-making as essential investigative tools.
A core aim is to help each student discover their unique creative identity and articulate a personal vision of what jewellery can mean. Projects are designed to engage thoughtfully with vital social, racial, and environmental issues, embedding an ethical awareness into the design process from the outset.
The curriculum is enriched by strong industry links, live projects, and professional practice modules that build essential career skills and provide real-world exposure. This practical focus is complemented by Cultural Studies, which runs parallel to studio work, offering the theoretical framework to critically analyse art, design, and culture within a wider societal context.
Program structure
Stage 1
- Unit 1: Introduction to Study in Higher Education: Jewellery
- Unit 2: Introducing Jewellery Skills
- Unit 3: Developing Jewellery Skills & Contextual Knowledge
- Unit 4: Creative Unions
Stage 1 focuses on building foundational technical skills, primarily through hands-on metalwork to develop confidence in making. Students learn fundamental design processes and undertake projects for specific cultural or fashion contexts. The stage also introduces collaborative practice and begins to explore the social and environmental dimensions of jewellery design.
Stage 2
- Unit 5: Research Methods and Approaches (Jewellery)
- Unit 6: Different Approaches
- Unit 7: Different Contexts
- Unit 8: Exploration and Focus
Stage 2 expands your technical repertoire with batch production and digital design tools while encouraging the development of a distinct personal style. You will critically examine ethical, sustainable, and social issues within contemporary jewellery contexts and relate them to your own practice. The stage also focuses on professional preparation, exploring various career pathways and offering opportunities to present your work to an external audience.
Stage 3
- Unit 9: Pilot Collection
- Unit 10: Dissertation
- Unit 11: Collection
Stage 3 is a period of self-directed work where you define your creative direction and produce a resolved pilot collection, forming the basis for your final degree collection. This stage requires you to independently manage a significant project while critically examining the ethical and social context of your work. Alongside this, you will complete a dissertation, demonstrating in-depth research and analysis on a chosen cultural subject, with an option to pursue an extended written study.
