Program description
The BA (Hons) Journalism and Publishing course is delivered at London College of Communication and develops skills in both digital/print publishing and multiplatform journalism for careers in editorial, production, and marketing. Students start by building core practical and ethical journalism skills, learning the strategies behind editorial decisions and audience revenue models.
This hands-on, industry-facing course involves collaborating on live briefs with publishers, guided by tutors with extensive professional experience. Using industry-standard facilities like newsrooms and studios, students learn to develop and produce stories. In the final year, students conceive, produce, and publish their own media product alongside a business strategy, leaving them well-prepared for roles across the creative industries.
Program structure
Year 1
Year 1 focuses on teaching the fundamentals of creating journalism for digital and print formats, alongside the publishing skills needed to distribute content across various channels. Students are introduced to the critical knowledge that shapes the current media landscape, gaining confidence in generating and sharing their own stories through course platforms. Some units are specific to Journalism and Publishing, while others are shared with the broader Journalism programme.
Year 2
Year 2 builds on your foundation by expanding design, project management, and editorial strategy skills while honing your journalism practice. You can personalize your journey through option units in areas like creative storytelling, editorial design, or photography, and enhance your professional profile via a work placement or live brief. Some units are specific to this course, while others are shared with the BA (Hons) Journalism programme, and there is an opportunity for an international exchange.
Year 3
Year 3 is the culmination of your studies, where you synthesise all your learning by creating a publishing product of your choice and completing a research project based on your interests. A key focus is professional preparation, helping you define and explore career paths such as working for media companies, in PR and marketing, or launching your own publication as a freelance journalist.
