Program description
The BA Product and Industrial Design programme at Central Saint Martins views design as a vital, process-driven activity for addressing complex global challenges. It prepares adaptable and proactive designers to create insightful outcomes that meet the future needs of people, society, and the planet.
Students develop critical competencies through hands-on learning, applying industry-standard tools in studio and live project scenarios. The course fosters a creative environment for investigation, collaboration, and making, supported by peers and experts. A core focus is cultivating a critical mindset, including eco-literacy, ethical inquiry, and systems thinking.
Learning within a diverse cohort enriches the experience, sharing broad perspectives. The programme is strongly connected to industry through partnerships, alumni networks, and live design challenges, ensuring education is directly informed by contemporary international practice and prepares students to be the next generation of creative leaders.
Program structure
Stage 1 – Skills
- Unit 1: Introduction to Study Product and Industrial Design in Higher Education
- Unit 2: Establishing Individual Design Skills (Platform-Aligned)
- Unit 3: Developing Design Skills (across Platforms)
- Unit 4: Creative Unions
During your first year of school, you will experiment with all three platforms while concentrating on building skills that are crucial to the product design process. This phase is all about finding that sweet spot between solo and group projects, so you can learn from each other while also developing as an individual. Through these four sections, you will have the chance to become involved with the course and the College community.
Stage 2 – Knowledge
- Unit 5: Our Futures
- Unit 6: Your Attributes
- Unit 7: Human Connection
- Unit 8: Industry Opportunities
Stage 2 covers the Design Process in four sections, from discovery to delivery. This involves "zooming-in" and "zooming-out". It expands on Stage 1 platform skills and lets you explore your ideas in a design platform. You will learn how to move from research to product and service development, connecting insight and execution. In a trip, designers will analyze established behaviors and patterns (hindsight) to identify valuable new agendas (insight) that offer new opportunities (foresight).
Stage 3 – Vision
- Unit 9: Launching – self-identified project
- Unit 10: Challenging and Refining Industry Propositions
The final year launches your career by pushing your creative boundaries, beginning with a self-initiated project that defines your design agenda. You then tackle live industry briefs to gain real-world sector experience and practice. The stage culminates with peer feedback to refine your direction before your final, industry-focused unit.
