Program description

The MA Applied Imagination programme at Central Saint Martins is a non-disciplinary, student-centred course that develops confident and responsible creative practitioners capable of driving change. It encourages original, self-directed research that challenges traditional boundaries and addresses global issues from individual concerns.

Students form external networks and experiment with new forms of knowledge production, gaining agency over their creative and professional futures. The course is committed to embedding ethical practices through UAL's Principles for Climate, Social, and Racial Justice, fostering a proactive community engaged in applied imagination.

Program structure

  • Unit 1: Imagination

Unit 1 immerses you in a series of short, individual and team-based projects that interrogate contemporary global agendas, such as building a time machine, to challenge conventional creativity. Working with peers and external experts, you explore changemaking through social justice, climate, health, identity, and technology, uncovering personal and collective resistances to change. The unit concludes with a draft research proposal for your personal project in later units.

  • Unit 2: The Collaborative Unit

This unit, embedded within Unit One, focuses on collaboration by partnering with other UAL postgraduate courses. Through cooperative work with students from diverse disciplines, you will experience the value of cross-disciplinary thinking and problem-solving, which is central to the MA Applied Imagination learning journey.

  • Unit 3: Application

In Unit 3, you will develop your research proposal into a viable project, establishing networks for stakeholder engagement and external verification. You will demonstrate understanding of action research and testing via intervention to embody your research question, planning and carrying out your work ethically and inclusively with a focus on social justice, supported by the course team in finding your own way forward.

  • Unit 4: Applied Imagination

Unit 4 requires you to complete the external verification of your research question, finalise and reflect on your research outcomes, and present them for assessment.
