Program description
The MA Art and Science programme at Central Saint Martins explores the creative relationships at the intersection of art and science through an evolving interdisciplinary practice. It questions established forms of knowledge construction, emphasizing interdisciplinarity, co-creation, and knowledge-sharing as essential to imagining possible futures.
The course brings together a diverse cohort to investigate how we understand, represent, and reinterpret the world, challenging perceptions and extending the senses through both studio and laboratory contexts. In the face of global challenges, it foregrounds ethical and philosophical questions, encouraging innovative contributions that expand the boundaries of understanding and explore what it means to be human in a time of extreme change.
Program structure
- Unit 1: Enquiry Through Interdisciplinary Practice
In this unit, you will explore emerging discourses in art and science through a series of projects, practical workshops, and introductions to relevant cultural venues and collections. Teaching is delivered via seminars, lectures, and group projects, providing a critical context for your research and practice while addressing diverse research methods and approaches to making.
- Unit 2: The Collaborative Unit
This unit fosters cross-course creative and collaborative practices to address global challenges through thematic, experimental, and applied cross-disciplinary research. It aims to establish a cooperative framework aligned with the College's shared values of social responsibility and knowledge exchange.
- Unit 3: Independent Project: Developing Interdisciplinary Practice
Unit 3 focuses on the relationship between research and practice, guiding you to conduct a focused investigation that results in a research paper, practical artwork, and a study plan for Unit 4. You will build a body of knowledge and a critical context for your practice, articulating intentions for a resolved body of work, supported by tutorials, critiques, and group discussions with guidance from a personal academic tutor.
- Unit 4: Independent Project: Realising Interdisciplinary Practice
In this final unit, you will produce a body of self-directed work, building on previous developments and engaging audiences through diverse forms of public presentation. Seminars on professional practice will guide your future development, while tutorials support your progress, encouraging you to explore different dissemination methods, including collaboration and curation for the public Showcase.

Requirements for applicants
The standard entry requirements for this course are as follows:
- An honours degree
- Or an equivalent EU/international qualification.
Exceptionally applicants who do not meet these course entry requirements may still be considered.
The course team will consider each application that demonstrates additional strengths and alternative evidence. This might, for example, be demonstrated by:
- Related academic or work experience
- The quality of the personal statement
- A strong academic or other professional reference
- Or a combination of these factors.

English language requirements
