Program description

The MA Design for Industry 5.0 programme at Central Saint Martins is built on principles of human‑centred and multispecies design, social entrepreneurship, circular economy, and open innovation, enabled by digital transformation and Industry 4.0 technologies. It draws on the EU’s Industry 5.0 vision, which aims beyond efficiency to reinforce industry’s role in society while respecting planetary boundaries, preparing you to shape a planet‑centric industry.

Care for the individual, society, and planet is both subject and method, defined as an attentiveness to the impact of design interventions and as a disruptive force for positive change. The course sees the designer as a critical social actor who collaborates across disciplines to develop new products, systems, and services that benefit human and non‑human stakeholders.

Through project‑based learning, team co‑creation, and the entrepreneurial use of intelligent, data‑driven technologies, you will define a future for industry by visualising new ways of collaborative working at the confluence of design, entrepreneurship, technology, and manufacturing. The curriculum builds technical, entrepreneurial, and ethical competencies - including UNESCO’s key competencies for sustainability - emphasising empathy, critical thinking, and integrated problem‑solving throughout.

Program structure

  • Unit 1: Care

This unit provides an overview of the technological, environmental, and entrepreneurial fields through the lens of “matters of care” and user‑centred design methodologies. It establishes an ethical community of practice where staff and students apply caring approaches to their work and interactions.

  • Unit 2: The Collaborative Unit

This unit aims to explore the potential of collaborative practice, equipping you with interdisciplinary approaches and collective agency to build communities of practice across the College. It examines how relational, network‑based methods can create positive impact for shared well‑being - social, economic, and environmental - focused on a specific place, space, or community of humans and non‑humans.

  • Unit 3: Values and Manufacture

In this unit, you will take what you have learnt in Units 1 and 2 to inform the strategic planning of an Industry 5.0 project. This unit spans  the final ten weeks of year one and the first ten weeks of year two.

It progresses through four phases:

    1. Project Manifesto
    2. Project Value Proposition
    3. Collaboration and Co-Design
    4. Project Positioning and Differentiation
  • Unit 4: Action / Impact

In this unit, you will manage, implement and evaluate your final self-directed Industry 5.0 project.
