Program description

The MA Fashion Communication at Central Saint Martins is a forward-looking program designed to train the next generation of theorists, writers, journalists, and visual communicators. It addresses the industry's transformation by analyzing emergent media and exploring the needs of new consumers through both digital and traditional platforms.

The course is structured around three specialized pathways: Fashion Journalism, Fashion Image, and Fashion Histories and Theories, each offering deep, focused study while encouraging collaboration across disciplines. A core commitment to Social, Racial, and Climate Justice is embedded throughout, challenging structural inequalities and promoting equity within fashion. By blending practical skills with critical theory and collaborative projects, the program prepares graduates to navigate and shape the fluid, global future of fashion communication with creativity and ethical responsibility.

Program structure

  • Unit 1: Investigation

Unit 1 is designed to challenge your assumptions and expand your understanding of the global fashion communications industry. You will study fashion within the context of art and design theory, examining its social, economic, and cultural impact. The unit also includes a collaborative project with MA Fashion designers, offering first-hand insight into collection creation and the chance to produce a creative or academic response to their work.

  • Unit 2: The Collaborative Unit

Unit 2 runs concurrently with Unit 1 and focuses on inter- and cross-disciplinary collaboration with other postgraduate courses across the college. Taking place in the Spring term, this college-wide unit provides a structured framework for developing your practice in alignment with the institution's social purpose and mission.

  • Unit 3: Specialist Major Project – Planning, Preparation and Negotiated Phase

The skills, knowledge, and innovative approaches developed throughout the first three units form the essential foundation for your self-initiated Major Project in Unit 4. They will directly inform and support the planning, preparation, and negotiation stages of this culminating work.

  • Unit 4: Specialist Major Project – Realisation and Presentation Phase

Having completed Unit 3, during the final unit of the course you will fully realise and present your Major Project.
