Program description

The MA Fashion Design Technology (Womenswear) programme at London College of Fashion is guided by experienced staff and resourced with industry‑standard equipment, nurturing enquiry and developing professionals who will influence the future of the industry. It is one of five courses within the Fashion Programme, focusing on advanced research, the synthesis of theory and practice, and the synergy between craft and technology.

Students develop their work conceptually and technically through investigative research into processes and materials, accessing specialist facilities for both hand‑crafted and digital manufacturing. The course encourages collaboration with peers and industry partners in areas like sourcing, manufacture, project management, and marketing, building valuable contacts for the future.

Supported by LCF’s Digital Anthropology Lab and Digital Learning Lab, students can innovate in integrated 3D digital design, exploring diverse production techniques from couture craftsmanship to futuristic experimentation to form the basis of their Masters collection.

Program structure

  • Expanded Fashion Practice

This unit is designed to establish and develop your creative thinking and expand your practical skills through workshops and facility inductions. You will evaluate and enhance your technical abilities by exploring innovative manufacturing and pattern cutting methods, while strengthening your research knowledge through alternative methodologies.

  • Collaborative Challenge

Emphasising cross‑disciplinary, student‑led collaboration, you can conceive your own project or engage with industry and college briefs.

  • Establish, Prototype and Test

This unit supports the planning and development of your Master’s Project, focusing on the evaluation and progression of your studio practice through in‑depth research. You will refine your critical practice in line with your expanding theories and proposed market, culminating in an oral presentation aligned with your Research Proposal outcomes.

  • Research Proposal

This unit focuses on developing effective research approaches crucial for your Master’s project and future career, guiding you to theoretically interrogate your practice and define your research philosophy. You will build core research capabilities, explore methodologies and tools, and construct a robust, ethically sound research proposal with achievable aims and critical questions, supported in both disciplinary and interdisciplinary exploration.

  • Masters Project

The Master's Project is the culminating, self‑directed phase of your studies, where you synthesise all acquired knowledge and skills under the guidance of a supervisor. You will negotiate the project's direction, communicate your work effectively, and demonstrate critical interrogation of your practice through robust research and theoretical analysis, resulting in a high‑quality piece that showcases your practice, academic literacy, and professional standards for your future career.
