Program description

The MA Fine Art programme at Chelsea College of Arts is designed to enhance the making, criticality, and articulation of your practice at a professional level. It encourages experimental studio practice and individual inquiry, challenging what art is and how it is communicated to expand the contextual reach of your work.

Through research, you will critically explore local, national, and international art contexts, building a sustainable, audience-aware practice that engages with culturally relevant concerns for a future-facing, progressive career.

Program structure

  • Unit 1: Establishing a community

This introductory unit immerses you in professional practice by developing your work for public audiences through collaborative exhibitions and events. It includes off-site activities to engage with London's art scene and requires a Research Portfolio that critically locates your artwork within contemporary cultural contexts.

  • Unit 2: Making your work public

This unit focuses on refining your ideas and professional articulation through discussion forums, guest consultancies, and development workshops. You will collaborate on projects, present work in various formats, and produce a refined Research Portfolio alongside a proposal for advancing your professional practice in the next unit.

  • Unit 3: Locating and sustaining your practice

Unit 3 focuses on advancing your career ambitions through an off-campus project, supported by an arts professional advisor. You will research and activate your practice within a chosen external context, such as starting a collective, joining a residency, or curating exhibitions, to support your critical and professional development.
