Program description
The MA Fine Art Digital programme at Central Saint Martins supports a broad range of experimental art practices across media like painting, sculpture, installation, and digital work, challenging you to bring your work into a contemporary critical context. It employs research-based teaching that responds to your individual needs while encouraging collaboration.
Students critically engage with social, racial, and environmental issues, using art-making as a testing ground for ideas and media. The focus is on developing your individual research into a confident, sustained practice through rigorous academic scrutiny and the creation of new artistic positions.
Program structure
- Unit 1: Research, Development and Practice
In Unit 1, you will develop a study statement to direct your practice and maintain a reflective blog to document and evaluate your practice-based research. This framework will guide the development of your work in Unit 2.
- Unit 2: Knowledge and Communication
In Unit 2, the emphasis is on ambitious practical work and deepening your contextual awareness within a community of practice, demonstrated through your reflective blog and active participation in group discussions. Additionally, you will write a research paper that contextualises your practice, collectively forming the essential foundation for your work in Unit 3.
- Unit 3: Reflection and Presentation
In Unit 3, your focus will be on resolving your work in alignment with your study statement and a broader contextual understanding. You will present your research at a symposium and your practical work in a public exhibition, while also considering your future practice and personal professional development.
