Program description

The MA Fine Art: Drawing programme at Camberwell College of Arts reconsiders drawing as an evolving practice, exploring 2D/3D methods, virtual methodologies, and film. It critically examines drawing within urgent social, cultural, and political frameworks to expand your research and material approach.

The course highlights drawing's interdisciplinary potential as a democratic, sustainable, and portable medium central to communication practices. By graduation, you will have developed a portfolio showcasing your individual research, visual range, and storytelling skills for professional opportunities.

Program structure

  • Unit 1: Locating practice within specialism

This introductory unit immerses you in Camberwell's teaching and research culture, encouraging independent experimentation to test and challenge your artistic approaches. You will expand your technical skills through material exploration, identify your creative aims via critical reflection and research methodologies, and document your practice's development for assessment, supported by cross-pathway lectures and professional skills training.

  • Unit 2: Testing beyond specialism

Building on feedback from Unit 1, this unit helps you deepen your research and define your creative processes through independent and peer learning. You will engage with current debates, test your work in seminars and exhibitions, expand your research methods, and develop professional skills, while starting to prepare a coherent body of work for the MA Show and submitting a research file for critical reflection.

  • Unit 3: Making public

In this unit, you will exhibit your work publicly to test ideas and gather feedback for further development, while optionally pursuing a professional project or critical writing. Supported by tutorials and workshops, you will collaborate with peers on a public research programme and present a resolved body of work with contextual research, also developing an online presence to showcase your practice.
