Program description
The MA Fine Art: Painting programme at Camberwell College of Arts investigates painting’s enduring currency and capacity for invention through material investigation and critical research, engaging with urgent contemporary debates and past traditions. You will explore both traditional processes and expanded forms of painting through independent testing, workshops, and specialist demonstrations, challenging your creative vision through critical analysis and reflection to situate your practice within wider social, political, and cultural discourses.
The course supports independent studio and workshop‑based learning, technical instruction, and peer review, while fostering a sense of community through group activities, exhibitions, and peer‑led projects across Camberwell’s MA Fine Art pathways. It also emphasises enterprise and employability through the Professional Toolkit programme, opportunities to showcase work publicly, and exploration of social, cultural, and ethical contexts such as climate, racial, and social justice. By graduation, you will have a portfolio demonstrating your research, visual range, and storytelling skills for potential employers.
Program structure
- Unit 1: Locating practice within specialism
This introductory unit immerses you in Camberwell's learning culture through independent experimentation, helping you test ideas and expand technical skills. You will identify your aims through critical reflection and practice‑based methodologies, while documenting studio developments for assessment and engaging with cross‑pathway lectures and professional skills training.
- Unit 2: Testing beyond specialism
Building on feedback from Unit 1, this unit helps you deepen your research and define your creative processes through independent and peer learning. You will engage with current debates, test your work in seminars and exhibitions, expand your research methods, and develop professional skills, while beginning to prepare a coherent body of work for the MA Show and submitting a research file for critical reflection.
- Unit 3: Making public
In this unit, you will exhibit your work publicly to test ideas and gather feedback for further development, while optionally pursuing a professional project or critical writing. Supported by tutorials and workshops, you will collaborate with peers on a public research programme and present a resolved body of work with contextual research, also developing an online presence to showcase your practice.
