Program description

The MA Graphic Design Communication at Camberwell College of Arts is rooted in pluralistic perspectives and global debates, building on graphic design's history of social engagement and activism.

The course empowers designers to shape public discourse and generate change by addressing complex, emergent realities. It fosters a dynamic environment for study, practice, and critical exchange, introducing key debates and methodologies central to critical design. Students refine their ability to synthesise research on cultures, environments, and more-than-human ecologies. Through experimentation and testing, they develop a practice that creates impactful visual communication to address pressing social challenges. The program's core goal is to thoughtfully seek better, unimagined relationships between materials, systems, technologies, and languages.

Program structure

  • Unit 1: Design methods and critical practices

Unit 1 introduces the MA Graphic Design Communication course, establishing a foundation for postgraduate studies. It develops research skills that connect writing and practice by examining diverse design examples. Through independent and collaborative making and documentation, students expand their knowledge and situate their own experience within the field.

  • Unit 2: Emergent design

Unit 2 introduces students to emergent methodological approaches and contemporary Critical Design practices. Through testing and integrating various research methods, students develop a personal design proposal that reflects their own values and position. This process expands their portfolio to include new investigative processes, interdisciplinary strategies, and broader communication contexts.

  • Unit 3: Situated design

This unit focuses on applying your developed personal practice to a specific real-world context outside the university. By exploring relevant design theories and situated practices, you will adapt your project to engage meaningfully with a particular community, site, or network. This process ensures your design work becomes more responsive and integrated into its intended context.
