Program description
The MA Illustration programme at Camberwell College of Arts supports you in building and enriching your visual practice through methods, concepts, and professional experiences that extend beyond graduation. It draws on storytelling and expanded notions of illustration, preparing you for the rapidly changing professional landscape through ambitious practical projects.
Together with a diverse community of students and staff, you will explore subjects using established and emerging technical processes, develop a critical position on urgent contexts, and gain experience presenting your work in a professional public setting.
Program structure
- Unit 1: Locate, identify and position
This introductory unit familiarises you with the course and college while helping you identify, map, and develop your illustrative methods through material exploration. You will articulate your position as an illustrator through written work and be introduced to key enquiry, practice, and critical theoretical methods.
- Unit 2: Intersect, converge and focus
In this unit, you will focus on developing sustainable momentum for your major project while collaborating with peers on a topic of shared social, cultural, or political urgency. Through seminars, tutorials, and workshops, you will explore the intersection of contemporary illustration practice with climate, racial, and social justice to critically position your work.
- Unit 3: Realisations, contributions and trajectories
In this final unit, you will focus on making your major project public through professional development workshops, seminars, and visiting practitioner talks that help you consider your trajectory beyond the course.
