Program description
The MA Interior and Spatial Design at Camberwell College of Arts takes an experimental, research-led approach to contemporary spatial practice, blurring disciplinary boundaries within a creative art school environment.
The course focuses on the experiential and sensorial aspects of inhabiting space, encouraging work not limited by traditional briefs or specific sites. Students explore both physical and virtual space as equal forms of experience, using making, drawing, text, and debate as complementary tools for expression. The program supports individual research interests and facilitates prototyping, iteration, and cross-disciplinary collaboration with internal and external practitioners. There is flexibility in how students develop their portfolio, which can include writing, filmmaking, installation, or other forms of practice beyond conventional design propositions. Ultimately, the course fosters a path of academic and personal discovery through a supportive and open creative process.
Program structure
- Unit 1: Discover and define
This introductory unit orients students to the course, college, and university, beginning with a peer review of existing portfolios to exchange ideas. Through short exercises and spatial investigations, students define their initial research interests and lay the groundwork for a research-led proposal. The unit also introduces key design methods, global contexts, and critical frameworks - including socio-economic, political, and justice issues - that inform all subsequent work in the built environment.
- Unit 2: Define and develop
In this unit, you will situate your creative practice within wider social and professional frameworks. Through focused experimentation, you will refine your research-led proposal and develop new practice-based work for your portfolio. This practical development is complemented by a written paper that synthesizes and reflects on the work completed in the first two units of the course.
- Unit 3: Develop and deliver
This unit focuses on presenting and resolving your research through your developed creative practice. You will showcase your project's evolution, its contextual and theoretical foundations, and its engagement with global and regional issues, including climate, social, and racial justice. The unit concludes with the submission of a final portfolio and written research, which can take forms such as a physical exhibition, digital presentation, or performance.
