Program description
The Elementary Years track equips prospective teachers to deal with the special educational requirements of young students at the start of their school careers. Those who are accepted into the Elementary Years stream become part of a cohort of teacher candidates who often start and finish their programs at the same time.
Teacher applicants are recommended for professional certification by the Chair of the School of Education to the Ministry of Education after successfully completing all academic courses for the Bachelor of Education. Graduates who choose to work in a public school in BC must submit an application to the BC Ministry of Education along with the necessary paperwork and payment of fees.

Requirements for applicants
- The BEd Elementary Years program requires a minimum GPA of 2.33 (C+) on the most recent 60 university credit hours:
- (a) an appropriate three- or four-year Bachelor's degree with 60 credit hours in Arts, Science, or other teachable disciplines relevant to the BC school system and 30 senior level credit hours, or
- (b) a minimum of 90 credit hours of undergraduate coursework, 60 of which must be in Arts, Science, or other teachable disciplines relevant to the BC education system, and 30 senior level credit hours, 12 of which must be 300 or 400 level.
The School of Education will assess transfer credit for coursework related to the 90 credit hours completed before UNBC enrolment
