Program description

The main target audience for this course is those who have completed the requirements for a law degree, been admitted to practice, typically abroad, and have been recommended by the Legal Practice Board of Western Australia to complete additional coursework in order to be permitted to practice law in this State.

You will be prepared to practice law in Western Australia after completing a Master of Legal Practice program. At a top-100 university, you will study with the upcoming generation of leaders in business, government, law, and non-profit organizations while learning from top-notch teachers. Graduates of this program are eligible to apply to the Legal Practice Board of Washington for admission as attorneys. The Legal Practice Board has the authority to establish additional standards for admission.

Students who completed a law degree based on the common law cannot take either LAWS4101 Foundations of Law and Lawyering OR LAWS4227 Foundations of Law and Legal Institutions. Students who have not completed a law degree based on the common law must complete either LAWS4101 Foundations of Law and Lawyering OR LAWS4227 Foundations of Law and Legal Institutions.

Requirements for applicants

To be considered for admission to this course an applicant must have

  • a Juris Doctor or Bachelor of Laws, or an equivalent qualification, as recognised by UWA;
  • an assessment of this qualification by the Legal Practice Board of Western Australia that outlines which units are required to practice.

English competency

  • This course has higher ELC requirements. Applicants presenting with the IELTS Academic require an overall score of at least 7.0 and no band less than 6.5.
