Program description

The purpose of this course is to give professionals, both legal and non-legal, the knowledge and skills they need to work in the mining, energy, and allied sectors.

Along with acquiring the required technical information, such as how iron ore is mined or petroleum is generated, you will study about a variety of legal issues pertaining to the mining, energy, and resources industries. You will gain by having a thorough and diverse understanding of the sector. Both law and non-law graduates can enroll in the course, which is perfect for anyone wishing to learn more about or pursue a job in the mining, energy, and natural resources industry.

Topics covered include native title, sustainability and social license to operate, Australian mineral and petroleum exploration and production, and other overarching policy goals.

Students who completed a law degree based on the common law cannot take LAWS4227 Foundations of Law and Legal Institutions. LAWS4227 Foundations of Law and Legal Institutions is a core unit in this program for all students who have not completed a law degree or have not completed a law degree based on the common law (6 points):

Requirements for applicants

To be considered for admission to this course an applicant must have

  • a Juris Doctor or Bachelor of Laws, or an equivalent qualification, as recognised by UWA; or 
  • a bachelor's degree in a cognate area, or an equivalent qualification, as recognised by UWA; and the equivalent of a UWA weighted average mark of at least 50 per cent; or
  • a bachelor's degree, or an equivalent qualification, as recognised by UWA; and the equivalent of a UWA weighted average mark of at least 50 per cent; and at least two years of relevant professional experience.

English competency

  • This course has higher ELC requirements. Applicants presenting with the IELTS Academic require an overall score of at least 7.0 and no band less than 6.5.
