Program description
The Science of Reading is thoroughly examined in the Master of Arts in Reading program, with an emphasis on organized literacy approaches. Participating in this program will provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to comprehend and apply evidence-based strategies in reading education. Educators can get the knowledge and skills to confidently and expertly meet the different literacy requirements of their students through this online degree program that is accredited by the International Literacy Association (ILA) and the International Dyslexia Association (IDA).
Students who successfully complete the Reading (MA) program's 30 credits are eligible to receive a Graduate Certificate in Dyslexia and the Science of Reading. This graduate certificate program addresses the unique needs of students who struggle to read, including those with dyslexia and other reading disabilities. A second graduation fee is required of students in order for them to receive the graduate certificate.

Supporting Coursework (12 credit hours)
Supporting coursework may include: program-relevant courses such as those listed below, advisor-approved graduate courses pertinent to the student's program of study or coursework applicable to graduate certificate programs in related fields. Up to 9 hours of approved transfer graduate courses from other universities may be included in the program.

NOTE: Courses in various academic programs sometimes require expendable supplies or services, and in these cases the student may be billed a class fee for such costs.
Requirements for applicants
- A completed online application for graduate admissions.
- A non-refundable application fee of $50 is required.
- Official transcripts from the educational institution from which the student earned their first bachelors-level degree. For U.S. institutions, this means accreditation from a regional accrediting body. Non-U.S. institutions must be recognized by the Ministry of Education as a university-level provider of higher education and accredited by any appropriate agencies within the home country and any countries in which it operates and/or issues degrees. This transcript and/or diploma must show the degree received and the date conferred. Applicants previously enrolled in graduate-level coursework must submit official transcripts of that work. All official transcripts and documents in a language other than English must be accompanied by a certified English translation.
- A curriculum vitae (résumé) that documents prior employment and experience or an essay on a topic of the student's choice, such as a special interest, significant experience or notable achievement. Minimum 300 word count in length.
Additional Requirements
Requirements for admission to the MA in reading program include:
- Receipt of all official transcripts.
- Final degree conferred GPA of 2.5 or higher.

- Completion of at least one year academic of college-level coursework for undergraduate students at a regionally accredited U.S. institution of higher learning within the last three years. It must be academic coursework that is completed; ESL coursework does not qualify.
- Completion of at least one semester of graduate-level courses with grades of B or higher at a regionally accredited U.S. institution of higher learning within the last three years. Coursework must be academic; ESL coursework does not qualify.
- If a student has completed three or more years of study in an English-medium high school or university-level academic program in a country other than ones listed above, he/she may request a waiver.
- Successful completion of the ELS Language Center's English for Academic Purposes or ELS Language Center Level 112 (must have valid ELS 112 Certificate of Completion).
- Successful completion of the University of Central Florida's Center for Multilingual Multicultural Studies (CMMS) Intensive English Program (must have valid completion certificate).
